DISCOVERY

Before Initiation, Discovery evaluates whether an idea is a viable project, an operation, or a “just do it” activity. It defines the business challenge, assesses feasibility, aligns benefits with strategy, and produces a Business Case for portfolio prioritization. This is where problem identification and solution definition take place, ensuring only the right work moves forward.

INITIATION

Initiation defines the project’s purpose, scope, and solution, and aligns it with organizational strategy. It formalizes the Project Charter, identifies stakeholders, secures key resources, and outlines expected outcomes and value. This phase concludes with sponsor approval of the charter, funding, and overall direction, ensuring the project is ready to move into planning.

PLANNING

Planning defines how the project will be executed by establishing the project structure, operating model, and detailed delivery approach. It involves collaborating with the project team to break down the work into clear deliverables, develop the project management plan and schedule, and define governance, constraints, and execution steps. This phase ensures alignment on what will be delivered, how it will be done, and who is responsible, providing a clear roadmap for successful project execution.

DELIVERY

Delivery executes the project plan by producing and delivering the defined outputs while actively managing performance, risks, and issues. Progress is continuously monitored against scope, schedule, and cost, with regular communication to stakeholders and escalation of any variances. This phase ensures effective control, informed decision-making, and alignment to expected outcomes, driving the realization of project value.

CLOSURE

Closure finalizes the project by delivering outputs to the customer, transitioning ownership to operations, and completing all administrative, contractual, and financial activities. It includes releasing resources, archiving documentation, and conducting lessons learned to evaluate performance and capture insights. This phase ensures a smooth handover, formal project acceptance, and valuable inputs for improving future projects.

VALUE

Value measures the success of the project by evaluating whether the expected benefits, outcomes, and return on investment are realized after delivery. It involves conducting post-implementation reviews, tracking performance over time, and assessing alignment with business objectives defined earlier in the lifecycle. This phase ensures that value is achieved, identifies opportunities for improvement, and informs future initiatives.
